Visit Stockholm - Nordic Charm At It's Best

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the city which lies on the 14 islands on Lake Malaren. Its museums, palaces and cultural buildings tell the history of this beautiful city in the most charming way. Nothing better illustrates life in the Nordic countries than cobbled streets, well preserved buildings, natural parks and chic premises of this wonderful city.

Vesa is a ship that sank in 1628 and was kept almost entirely. Vasa Museum opened in 1990 and is considered the most visited museum in Scandinavia. The Museum belongs to Swedish National Maritime Museums and is located on the island of Djurgarden. The ship’s architecture is fascinating, specific items are displayed inside the seventeenth’s century vessel.

Djurgarden is a place with many historical buildings, museums (Skansen), monuments, galleries, amusement parks (Gröna Lund) and yacht harbors. It is an extremely attractive destination for both tourists and locals, is the main recreation area in Stockholm.

Drottningholm Palace was built at the beginning of the sixteenth century and is the official residence of the Swedish royal family. The palace is open to public visits, bing quite a popular tourist attraction. It is one of the most beautiful palaces in northern Europe due to its impressive architecture and baroque decorations. The palace is located on the island named Lovon.

The old town, called Gamla Stan in Swedish, is the geographical center of Stockholm, on the island of Stadsholmen. The charm of this island is given by its narrow streets, medieval buildings and small shops. Here is also the Royal Palace and on the nearby islants are administrative buildings. Helgeandshholem Island headquarters parliament houses and the island Riddarholmen is found the church with the same name, the oldest building of the city.

Skansen is situated on Djurgarden island and is the first outdoor museum in the world. It was opened in 1891 by Artur Hazelius with the purpose of showing the lifestyle in different parts of Sweden before the industrial age. The museum has over 300,000 m² and includes a replica of a Swedish town XIV century, complete with small traders and a zoo with local animal species.

Stockholm is a city that is well preserving the Nordic charm, being at the same time, a special place because of its islands populated with parks, colorful buildings and unique museums in the world. Therefore, Stockholm is a perfect destination for a city break.

    I had the opportunity to visit Stockholm in 2008. My friend Eva took me around and we visited the Djurgarden Island. It was an awesome experience. We took pictures and if I ever go back to Sweden for holidays, the Djurgarden Island is still my top touristic site.
